Dreams from my father – Short Respond to section 1

In 2- 3 paragraphs Choose 3 quotes from the first section that you believe are essential to your understanding of it. Tell me why.

The first quote I choose is when Obama’s grandfather told him “ now there’s something you can learn from your dad” “confidence. The secret to a man’s success.” I choose this quote because I believe that it is true. In order to be successful especially when you are of color, you must be confident in everything you do or people will put you down and doubt your abilities and skills.

The second quote that I choose is “understand something, boy. You’re not going to college to get educated. You’re going there to get trained. They’ll train you to want what you don’t need.” I choose this quote because I think its kind of strange for a person to think that college doesn’t educate you but it trains you to became a better person and need the little things in life. This quote fits the book because ever since Obama was little he kept moving and never realized the importance of staying in one place and getting to adapted and need the little things from a hometown.

The final quote I choose is when Obama’s father sends him a letter saying that everything is fine. The quote is a part of the letter is states “ the important thing is that you know your people, and also that you know where you belong.” I think this quote is important to the understand of this section because it shows that even though Obama and his father aren’t in very good terms his dad still cares to tell him that everything is ok. Also this quote represents the fact that if you don’t know where you came from or which people are “your people” you won’t know your self and will not be able to relate to anybody and that will lead you to not fitting in.

1. morrison uses metaphors to compare MR. MacTeer to winter by showing how he lived his life and how everthing he did was for his family.

2.Pecola was harrased my the group of boys by they called her names and made fun of her family espically her dad. this effects her by she feels really ashamed and sad because that is personal family matters. this is just like common bullying because when someone bullies someone they find the most embarrasing thing about a person and uses that aganist them and that exactly what the boys did to Pecola.

3. I would describe Maureen Peal as a very beautiful girl apperance wise , but her personality is very ugly because she uses her looks to make people like her. first of i was Maureen was misunderstood and judged by the girls because she treated Pecola very nicely but later on she bullied her and that shows that she is not REAL she just has sneaky ways of getting what she wants.

4. Claudia and Frieda compare themselves to Maureen by saying that she is popular and cute and they are ugly and no matter what people will talk about them and make fun of their everything.

5. when the MacTeer sister’s seen Mr. Henry with the prostitute they knew exactly what he was doing with them but they were still curious about why he would bring them in their house. they act like they don’t know what is going on when they talk to Mr.Henry and their actions she that they respect their mother’s words and they will do anything to stay out of trouble.

6. Geraldine is the mother of junior she has a cat that she loves more then her son. she works hard to keep the house and her son and the car happy. her significance to his story is she is another person who treated Pecola badly with out hearing her perspective of what happened.

7. Geraldine is important to the story because she might hear what Pecola has to say and they she might belive her and that could effect Pecola by the end of the story. Geraldine treats junior in a way where she doesnt love him but since he is her son she gives him everything he wants.

8. Junior treats Pecola by first he was nice to her then he takes her as his hostage and lies to his mother about her killing the cat. Junior’s mother Geraldine treats Pecola by cursing at her and telling her to get out of her house, she treats her very badly even though Pecola is innocent.

A Story About Siblings

link: http://storycorps.org/listen/stories/debbie-watterson-and-her-son-mitchel/

I choose this story because it was about a relationship between a brother and a sister and since I have a brother I can some what relate to this story. I really like this story because its nice for a family to help out one another in need and when something is wrong family should be there for you no matter what. the think that stood out to me in this story is how the daughter was deaf and everyone teased her except for her 10 year old brother who helped her and stood up for her. I thought his story was very sweet and heartwarming because you don’t see siblings getting along all the time. I would recommend this story for everyone to hear because it makes a person think what would you do if you brother or sister was deaf or had any kind of disability..

Doubters and Believers !

What did you think about doubters and believers?

I thought doubters and believers was a fun game where everyone got to know more about eachother and what each person thinks and belives in.  WE SHOULD DO MORE ACTIVITIES LIKE THIS ONE !

What did you learn about yourself and others?

I learned that i like to stand up for what I believe in and try to convince people to think the same way I do and if they have strong feelings about their opionions then its fine. i learned that each person is different and no matter what there are 2 two people that are completly alike.

What values are important to you based on what we did this morning?

The values that are important to me based on this activity are family and friends because with out them I wouldnt be who I am today or have strong feelings toward certain things in life.

The lady with the pet dog by Oates

1- I enjoyed Oates’ version of the story “Lady with the Pet Dog” because it make things simpler and easier to understand whats going on .

3- Anna and her lover are drawn to each other because they both live lives were they are unhappy and have certain views about people of the other gender. when they met each other they both realized they are similar in many ways and that not all people are the same. We learn that their spouses don’t really love them its just an act where people pretend to like each other for society.

4- Anna was so unhappy after the affair because she thought that Dmitri doesn’t respect her and she feels guilty about cheating on her husband and doesn’t know if any of these two men truly love her. She thinks of suicide because she feels guilty about the affair and thinks it will be better if she dies so that way no-one can disrespect her and she cant cause any more problems.

5- Anna thinks that all men are selfish , cheating people who don’t respect any women and just wants one thing from them. Yes, Anna’s view of men changes because she notices how much Dmitri loves her and that maybe he wasn’t after her because of lust but because of true love.

9- I think Anna reaches a solution to her problem by the end of the story because her feelings about men change and she realizes how much she loves Dmitri so she will have to make some changes to her life in order to be with Dmitri but in my opinion as long as she is happy and satisfied is doesn’t matter what people think.

The lady with the pet dog…

The story answers the question ” what does it mean to be in a bond with anther person ” by saying to be in bond with someone you have to trust them a 100% and be comfortable with them whenever and whereever. To be in a bond with a peroson you have to love them and not cheat on them and not just love them for lust but for who they really are. In this story love is expressed in privatcy and hidding but true bonding between two people is suppose to be public and your not suppose to be emarassed of the person your with.

In my opionion I think being in a bond with someone is all about communication and what I mean by that is you have to be able to tell eachother anything and everything and when your in a bond with someone you have to be able to express your feelings and emotions to that person knowing that they will not judge you but help you and give you advise if you need it.

Questions :

#3- what does Gurov’s view of women reveal about him ? why does he regard them as an ” inferior race” ?

* Gurov’s view of women reveal that he is a player and only wants a women for one thing and then afterward he gets bored with them, he calls them an inferior race because he has no respect for them and thinks they are all like his wife.

#5- when and why do Gurov’s feelings about anna begin to change? Is he really in love with her ?

* Gurov’s feelings about anna begin to change right after their affair when she told him she was leaving. his feelings change because he relizes she is different from all the other women in his llife and that he cant live without her.

#6 Who or what is the antagonist in this story ? what is the nature of the conflict ?

* The nature of the conflict is society is stopping Anna and Gurov from being together because they are both married.

#8 Why do you think Chekhov doesn’t report what ultimately becomes of the loves? Is there a resolution to the conflict ? Is the ending of the story effective ?

* Chekhov doesn’t say what becomes of Anna and Gurov’s relationship because he gives us enough foreshadow to predict what will happen to them in the future. The is no resolution mentioned in the story because so far society is the only thing stopping them from being together. The ending of the story is effective because its hopeful and tells you that Anna and Gurov have a long and happy future together.

#9 Discuss the validity of Gurov’s belief  that people lead their life in private rather then in public.

* Gurov’s belief is correct because everyone has secrets from the time that their born to the moment they die, and those secrets are what makes you you. for example most people smile and act happy in school but deep inside them they could be really upset and also people might act good in school and be the worst kid on the block.
